Somatic Experiencing

373552150Stop trying to think your way into getting better.

Most of us spend a lot of time in our heads trying to figure out ways to feel better.

But instead of feeling better, we end up exhausted from all the thinking we’re doing.

It increases physical tension, bodily discomfort, and physical ailments.

Sometimes, you need more than talk therapy.

Perhaps you’ve tried talk therapy but didn’t get the improvement you were looking for.

You may have even gone to a doctor who ended up giving you medication, but the discomfort and aching in your body continued to be a pain… literally.

It’s easy to see how all this is “stress-related,” so therapy feels like it’s worth a second chance.

When people think of trauma, they often think of sexual abuse or veterans who have been in war.

Sure, those are traumatic events, but other experiences can be traumatic, too – like a car accident or your childhood belief that your parents were abandoning you when they left you with a babysitter.

When you experience a threat or trauma, the body protects itself by going into “fight, flight, or freeze” mode. Animals do this, too.

But unlike animals, your body holds on to those memories and stores that trauma. That emotional energy remains lodged in your body, causing dysregulation in your nervous system and disrupting the flow of your life and being.

When you’re traumatized, you never fully feel safe, and that distress shows up as physical symptoms in your body.

This is where Somatic Experiencing comes in.

Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented approach created by Dr. Peter Levine to work with trauma and stress-related disorders.

It’s rooted in the mind-body connection, and its purpose is to help regulate your nervous system by working with your body’s sensations and allowing you to come to a place of neutrality and safety.

Movement, imagery, imagination, memory, and resourcing are some of the creative ways we use to restore your mind-body connection.
